Amplified Bible(AMP)

The Amplified Bible was produced by the Lockman Foundation — the organization behind the NASB — with the complete edition appearing in 1965, following an Amplified New Testament in 1958. Much of the work was driven by Frances Siewert, a Bible teacher who spent decades developing the “amplification” method. It draws on the same American Standard Version lineage as the NASB, with the amplifications layered on top of a formal base text.

The idea is to bring the extra shades of meaning a Hebrew or Greek word carries — meanings a single English word usually can't hold — directly into the text. A key term is followed by brackets or parentheses offering alternate renderings, a short definition, or an implied clarification. Where a normal translation has to pick one English word, the Amplified shows several.

The Lockman Foundation substantially revised the Amplified Bible in 2015, updating the base translation and standardizing the bracket system so it is easier to follow. The base text is formal-equivalence and translates from the standard Critical Text; the amplifications are the added layer.

The trade-off is readability. The brackets, parentheses, and inserted phrases break the flow of a sentence, so the Amplified is hard to read aloud or in long stretches — it is a translation to sit with a single verse in, not to read through. It is most at home in personal study and devotional use, and is especially popular in charismatic and Word of Faith circles, where drawing out every nuance of a promise or command is valued.

The Amplified's method carries a risk its own translators acknowledged: when every possible shade of a word is laid out in brackets, a reader can be tempted to pick whichever meaning fits what they already want the verse to say. A word's range of possible meanings is not the same as its meaning in a given sentence, which the context usually settles. The Amplified helps most when it prompts a closer look, and least when it is treated as license to choose.
